Jet Aviation prepares to break ground on new completions hangar

Jet Aviation is building a new 8,700m² (93,600ft²), wide-body hangar in Basel, Switzerland, to replace the facility’s existing hangars 3 and 4.

The new hangar 3 will add 4,550m² (48,975ft²) of hangar space and 2,000m² (21,527ft²) of shops and offices. It will also see the ramp extended by 5,000m² (53,819ft²). Construction will begin in August 2017, with completion slated for the end of 2018.

It is hoped Hangar 3 will strengthen the company’s ability to meet rising demand for completions, maintenance and RMU services, particularly for wide-body aircraft. The new hangar will have capacity to hold a number of wide- and narrow-body aircraft simultaneously, and be suitable for wide-body projects up to Boeing 747.

Neil Boyle, senior vice president completions and general manager Basel site operations, said, “This significant investment in new infrastructure is a clear demonstration of Jet Aviation’s commitment to meeting customer needs around the world. It will enable us to be more flexible in scheduling current and future workloads to satisfy the expectations of our clients.”

Disruption to customers and employees is expected to be minimal as Jet Aviation has leased additional hangar and shop space to maintain capacity and capabilities throughout the process. Work has begun on the tarmac extension to help facilitate aircraft movements around the build site. Once completed, the extended tarmac will enable larger aircraft to easily approach the new hangar.
