F1 2021: Airport guide for private flights

F1 2021 restarted at the Bahrain International Circuit in March this year with spectators, allowing charter operators to offer private flights to fans wanting to enjoy the glamour and excitement of the racing.

BAI has rounded up all of the nearest airports for each of the remaining race destinations to get you up to speed when planning a private flight to an F1 race – so all you need to worry about is how many pitstops you plan to have on your way to the event.

 

Portuguese Grand Prix

April 30 – May 2, Portimão

This race will take place at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve on Sunday May 2.

Faro Airport is 51 miles (82km) away from Autodromo Internacional do Algarve. Omni Handling is the leading business aviation handling agent in Portugal, with a 50% market share for private flights.

Omni offers 24/7 ramp and aircraft services, crew lounge and VIP lounge. The longest runway is 8169ft.

Spanish Grand Prix

May  7 – 9, Carrer Mas Moreneta, Barcelona

On May 9, the Spanish Grand Prix will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Barcelona Airport–El Prat is 29 miles (47km) away from the race track and offers FBO services from GESTAIR FBO, ExecuJet and Universal Aviation.

Girona Airport is 42 miles from the track and ExecuJet, CenterVol FBO and Universal Aviation operate from here. Services include VIP passenger lounges, crew lounges, fuel coordination and ground transportation. The longest runway is 12,281ft.

Monaco Grand Prix

May 20-23, Monte Carlo

On May 23, the Monaco Grand Prix will take place at Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo.

Nice Cote d’Azur Airport is 20 miles (32km) from Circuit de Monaco. Aviapartner Executive, Signature Flight Support and Swissport Executive Aviation all provide FBO services for private flights. Facilities include VIP lounges, de-icing services, snooze room and crew lounge.

The longest runway is 9,711ft.

Azerbaijan Grand Prix

June 4–6, Baku, Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place on June 6 and will take place at the Baku City Circuit. If you are planning to spectate this F1 race, the Heydar Aliyev International Airport is just 24 miles (39km) from the track.

FBO services at this airport are provided by ASG Business Aviation and include separate VIP entrance and guarded parking place, duty-free shop, VVIP room and conference room. The longest runway is 13,107ft.

Canadian Grand Prix

June 17-19, Montreal

The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal hosts 70 laps of F1 racing on June 13 for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is 19 miles (31km) from where the race will take place and has an abundance of FBOs to choose from. Air Creebec, Aviation Etcetera, Innotech Aviation Services, Signature Flight Support and Skyservice Business Aviation all operate from here offering numerous services including aircraft service centre, Canada customs clearance, passenger lounge, pilot lounge and flight planning.

Both Avgas 100LL and Jet A1 are available and the longest runway is 11,000ft.

French Grand Prix

June 25-27, Le Castellet

Spectators can enjoy F1 racing this year in France at Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet on June 27. The nearest dedicated business aviation airport, Le Castellet Airport, is the ideal destination for flying to this race as it is only 2 miles (3.2km) from the track.

The airport offers crew and passenger services and has five hangars. The longest runway is 5,741ft.

 

Austrian Grand Prix

July 2-4, Spielberg

Vienna Airport is 128 miles (206km) from the Red Bull Ring track where the Austrian Grand Prix will take place. The airport has services provided by Jet Aviation, Avcon Jet AG, Magnum FBO and Vienna Aircraft Handling. Services include passenger, crew and aircraft handling, coordination of refueling and deicing.

The longest runway is 11,811ft.

British Grand Prix

July 16-18, Towcester

If you’re planning on traveling to the Silverstone Circuit to watch the British Grand Prix, there are multiple airports with facilities to suit everyone.

Birmingham Airport is 55 miles (89km) away from the event and has 24/7 operational hours. FBO services are provided by Signature Flight Support and XLR Executive Jet Centre.

Cranfield Airport, 25 miles (40km) away and the FBO is managed exclusively by Cranfield Airport. The longest runway is 5,902ft.

Heathrow’s operating hours are 24 hours, but night-time restrictions apply from 11:00pm-6:00am. FBO operations are provided by Signature Flight Support. This airport is 67 miles (108km) from the track.

Gatwick’s operating hours are also 24 hours, and night-time restrictions also apply between 11:00pm-6:00am. FBO operations for this airport are provided by Signature Flight Support and it is 104 miles (167km) away from Silverstone.

Stansted is 69 miles from the track and its operating hours are 24 hours, with night-time restrictions between 11:30pm-6:00am. FBO operations are provided by Harrods Aviation, Fayair, Universal Aviation, XJet London and Inflite Jet Centre.

Luton’s FBO operations are provided by Harrods Aviation and Signature Flight Support. This airport is 34 miles away from London. The airport is 48 miles (77km) from the Silverstone Circuit.

London City Airport is 95 miles (153km) from the racetrack and FBO operations are provided by Jet Centre. Jet Centre at RAF Northolt Airport is an FBO extension to London City Airport ideal for business jet charter customers. It is 65 miles (105km) away from where the race will take place.

Farnborough’s operating hours are Monday-Friday 7:00am-10:00pm and weekends and bank holidays are 8:00am-8:00pm. Farnborough airport is 87 miles (140km) from the circuit and has an airport-owned FBO.

Oxford is 27 miles (43km) away from the track and has operating hours between 6:00am-10:30pm and FBO operations are provided by Oxfordjet Terminal.

Biggin Hill’s operating hours are Monday-Friday 6:30am-11:00pm and at weekends and on bank holidays operating hours are 8:00am-10:00pm. FBO operations are provided by Biggin Hill Executive Handling and the airport is 108 miles (174km) from the track.

Southend is 102 miles (164km)  from Silverstone. Operating hours are 24 hours and FBO operations are provided by Stobart Jet Centre.

Hungarian Grand Prix

July 30- August 1, Mogyoród

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is 26 miles (42km) from the Hungaroring Circuit where the Hungarian Grand Prix will take place on August 1.

The airport offers 24/7 operating hours, Jet A and FBO facilities provided by its general aviation terminal, Celebi Aviation Holding and Euro Jet Ops.

The longest runway is 12,162ft.

Belgian Grand Prix

August 27- 29, Stavelot

The Belgian Grand Prix will take place at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on August 29.

Brussels Airport is 86 miles (138km) from the track and FBO services are provided by ExecuJet, Facilities include VIP passenger lounges, crew lounges, fuel coordination and ground transportation.

The longest runway is 11,936ft. Luxembourg airport is also 86 miles from the track. Facilities here are run by Luxembourg Airport Business Aviation Terminal, the only private jet terminal in the country.

Services include custom and border control, crew and passenger transportation at the apron and VIP lounge. The longest runway is 13,130ft.

Dutch Grand Prix

September 3- 5, Zandvoort

The Dutch Grand Prix, which takes place at Zandvoort Circuit on September 5 is 16 miles (8 to 26km) from Airport Schiphol.

FBO services are provided by KLM Jet Center, Aviapartner Executive Aviation, Servisair Amsterdam and Jet Aviation. These FBOs offer a number of services including passenger handling, on-site immigration and customs clearance, transportation, hotel and catering coordination, as well as aircraft cleaning, de-icing and refueling. Jet-A1is available here.

The longest runway is 12,467ft.

Italian Grand Prix

September 10-12, Monza

The Italian Grand Prix will take place on September 12 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. If you’re planning to spectate this F1 race, you have two airports to choose from.

Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate are both operated by SEA Prime and operate 24/7. FBO services at both airports are provided by Argos VIP Private Handling and Sky Services.

In 2019 SEA Prime opened a new business and general aviation terminal, Milano Prime. Located in Milano Malpensa airport between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, the 24/7 terminal covers a surface of 1,400m² and features a 50,000m² apron in addition to a 5,000m² hangar.

The terminal has five lounges that are equipped with a full range of services allowing all passengers of Milano Prime to use the conference centers, limousine service and concierge.

Milan Malpensa is 40 miles (64km) from the track and Milan Linate is just 13 miles away.

Russian Grand Prix

September 24-26, Krasnodar Krai

The Russian Grand Prix will take place at the Sochi Autodrom on September 26.

Sochi International Airport is 6 miles (10km) from the circuit. FBO services are provided by the airport. The longest runway is 9,482ft.

Singapore Grand Prix

October 1-3, Marina Bay

The Singapore Grand Prix will take place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit on October 3. Singapore’s Changi International Airport is just 12 miles (20km) away from where event will happen. FBO services are provided by Signature Flight Support, Jet Aviation, Universal Aviation, Jetex and Hawker Pacific Asia.

The FBOs offer a number of services including conference rooms, passenger lounge, VIP suite and snooze room. The longest runway is 13,123ft.

Japanese Grand Prix

October 8-10, Ino

The Japanese Grand Prix will take place on October 10 at the Suzuka International Racing Course.

The Suzuka International Racing Course is 48 miles (77km) from the Chubu International Airport. Chubu International Airport’s operating hours are 24/7 and offers a Business Jet Terminal with ground handling, concierge services, a VIP lounge, catering and refueling for Jet A-1 fuel.

Immigration can be carried out quickly through dedicated lines – this must be coordinated ahead of time with the organizations involved. The longest runway is 11,483ft.

United States Grand Prix

October 22-24, Austin

F1 returns to the USA at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas on October 24. For spectators planning to travel to the race, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is only 9 miles (14km) from the track.

FBO services are provided by Atlantic Aviation, Million Air, Signature Flight Support, Henriksen Jet Center and Duncan Aviation. Services include conference rooms, passenger lounge, and snooze room. The longest runway is 12,250ft.

Mexican Grand Prix

October 29-31, Mexico City

The Mexico City Grand Prix, will take place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit in Mexico City on October 31. Benito Juárez International Airport is just 3 miles (5km) from the track. Services are provided by Manny Aviation Services. Its longest runway is 12,966ft.

Brazilian Grand Prix

November 5-7, Sao Paulo

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix, which takes place at  Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Brazil will commence on November 7. Guarulhos International is 34 miles (55km) away from the race. Services are provided by the airport’s general aviation terminal, Universal Aviation, Signature Flight Support and Jetex.

The longest runway is 12,139ft. FBO services include conference rooms, passenger lounge, and snooze room.

Australian Grand Prix

November 19-21, Melbourne 

The Australian Grand Prix, will be at the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit on November 21. Melbourne Tullamarine Airport is 18 miles (29km) away from Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit. Services are provided by Melbourne Jet Base and include multiple hangars, refueling and ground handling operations.

The longest runway is 11,998ft.

Saudi Arabia Grand Prix

December 02-05, Jeddah 

The Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, will take place at the brand-new Jeddah Street Circuit on  December 5. King Abdulaziz International Airport is 20 miles (32km) from the new track. FBO services are provided by Saudia Private Aviation Terminal. Services include 24/7 operations, Jet A-1 and private lounge. The longest runway is 13,123ft.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

December 10-12,Yas Island 

The last race of the F1 season will be Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 12. This race will take place at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island on December 12. The closest airport to the circuit is the Abu Dhabi International Airport which is 6 miles (10km) away. The longest runway is 13,451ft.
