Air Ambulances UK has released a manifesto outlining four policy priorities for air ambulance charity operations across the country.
The manifesto, titled Critical Moments, Lifesaving Decisions, calls for improvements to hospital helipad access, patient data systems, navigation technology and public awareness of charity funding structures. Air Ambulances UK represents 21 air ambulance charities operating in the UK.
The organization requests 24/7-ready on-site helipads at all Major Trauma Centres and specialist hospitals, prioritizing upgrades at sites rated as high or medium concern. The manifesto also calls for secure access to linked patient data through the Patient Record Access for National Audit system to enable outcome tracking and care improvements.
Jamie Ward, policy and public affairs manager at Air Ambulances UK, said the priorities reflect operational needs. “This manifesto highlights four key national policy issues that affect the lifesaving work of the UK’s air ambulance charities — and presents clear opportunities for Government action,” Ward said. “These priorities are informed by frontline operational experience and are on behalf of the urgent needs of the communities air ambulance charities serve.”
The manifesto requests temporary re-adoption of European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service to address weather and visibility limitations during missions while the UK develops its own Satellite-Based Augmentation System. According to the organization, the system would reduce flight delays and cancellations.
Air Ambulances UK calls for improved national messaging about the independent charitable nature of air ambulance services. The manifesto seeks to strengthen public understanding of funding structures for the 21 air ambulance charities.
The manifesto has received support from Airbus, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Air Ambulances, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Aviation, Babcock International Group, the British Helicopter Association and the HELP Appeal. Additional sector organizations have backed the policy priorities.
Air Ambulances UK provides national funding, raises awareness and advocates on issues affecting air ambulance charity services. The organization works with partners and donors to support pre-hospital care operations across the UK.
