Fixed-base operator Avflight and Detroit City leadership have broken ground on a new facility at Coleman A. Young International Airport (KDET).
The development includes a 5,000-square-foot (465-square-meter) fixed-base operator terminal, a 20,000-square-foot (1,858-square-meter) heated hangar, and an attached 1,440-square-foot (134-square-meter) parking garage. Construction is scheduled for completion in December 2025.
The project represents part of ongoing revitalization efforts at the airport.
“With its proximity to the city’s business district and automotive industry, this new general aviation terminal will serve as a gateway to commerce, tourism and opportunity,” said Joe Meszaros, vice president of operations at Avflight. “It will stand as a beacon of growth, job creation and educational opportunity for Detroit citizens.”
The facility will provide fuel and ground handling services for general aviation aircraft. The company has operated at KDET since 2011 and plans to double its staff as part of the expansion.
The project builds on recent airport improvements including a US$3.5 million runway renovation and LED taxi lighting upgrades. Planned investments include ramp pavement improvements, an engineered material arresting system, and a new control tower scheduled for 2026.
“This groundbreaking celebrates more than just bricks and mortar—it symbolizes renewed momentum for Coleman A. Young International Airport,” said Meszaros. “With Avflight’s partnership and the city’s ongoing investments, KDET is positioned to become a gateway that drives economic vitality.”
Avflight operates as part of the Avfuel-branded network of more than 675 fixed-base operators worldwide. The company has developed facilities across North America and Europe.
The Detroit facility will incorporate sustainable aviation fuel capabilities, electric charging infrastructure, and ground support equipment. Avflight plans to expand educational partnerships aimed at fostering aviation careers among Detroit youth.
The company’s investment reflects confidence in KDET’s potential as a general aviation hub. The airport serves Detroit’s business district and automotive industry with general aviation access.
Construction will expand Avflight’s service offerings while supporting the airport’s broader economic development goals. The facility aims to enhance Detroit’s aviation infrastructure and provide community opportunities.
