Istanbul Airport has signed a sister airport agreement with Sydney Airport to increase passenger and cargo traffic and enhance air services between Turkey and Australia.
The partnership establishes annual management meetings and workshops between the two airports. Both facilities will exchange operational data and best practices while promoting new air services and conducting joint marketing activities to raise the visibility of Istanbul and Sydney as destinations.
The agreement marks Istanbul Airport’s tenth such partnership, following a June agreement with Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The Turkish hub has established similar agreements with Incheon International Airport in South Korea, Capital Airports Holding, Shanghai Airport Authority and Sichuan Provincial Airport Group in China, Copenhagen Airport in Denmark, Airports of Thailand and Airports Corporation of Vietnam.
Istanbul Airport operates flights to over 330 destinations and serves more than 110 airlines. According to the 2025 Airport Industry Connectivity Report published by Airports Council International Europe, the facility overtook Frankfurt to lead the Global Hub Connectivity ranking and maintained its position as Europe’s most connected airport in 2024 and 2025.
The airport ranks among the top three facilities globally by number of airlines served. The partnership aims to strengthen tourism, trade and cultural connections between Istanbul and Sydney.
Under the agreement, both airports will share non-commercially sensitive data and collaborate on route development and destination promotion. According to Istanbul Airport operator iGA, the partnership supports both facilities’ objectives for passenger experience and global connectivity.
