Joby Aviation has integrated its all-electric air taxi into the Uber app, enabling riders to book flights directly through the platform ahead of the company’s first planned passenger operations in Dubai later this year.
The feature, branded Uber Air powered by Joby, allows users to enter their destination in the Uber app and, if the trip qualifies, select an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxi option alongside ground transportation. A single tap books the entire multimodal journey, including Uber Black vehicle pickup and drop-off.
Joby’s aircraft uses six tilting propellers to take off vertically before transitioning to wing-borne forward flight. It can travel at speeds of up to 200mph with a range of up to 100 miles on a single charge and is designed to carry up to four passengers plus a certified commercial pilot.
The aircraft is engineered with multiple levels of redundancy and features an acoustic profile designed to blend into ambient city noise. Passengers will have access to large windows offering panoramic views from every seat.
The company has completed more than 50,000 miles of flight testing across its fleet and has begun power-on testing of its first conforming aircraft as part of the final stage of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification process, a prerequisite for commercial operations in the USA.
Sachin Kansal, chief product officer at Uber, said, “With Uber Air, riders will be able to book Joby’s electric air taxi through a simple and familiar, one-tap experience on Uber, seamlessly connecting every leg of their journey – making ground-to-sky travel even more effortless.”
Eric Allison, chief product officer at Joby, said, “Our focus has always been on creating a flight experience that operates quietly and integrates naturally into the rhythm of city life. By partnering with Uber, we’re making this new mode of transportation familiar and accessible, connecting the ground and the sky through a system designed to save people time.”
The two companies have worked together on eVTOL air mobility since 2019. In 2021, Joby acquired Uber’s Elevate division, which played a key role in establishing the urban air mobility sector and developing tools for market selection, demand simulation and multimodal operations.
Beyond Dubai, the eVTOL service is planned to expand to markets including New York, Los Angeles, the UK and Japan. Last year, Uber and Joby announced plans to bring Blade’s commercial helicopter service to the Uber app in 2026 following Joby’s acquisition of Blade’s passenger business, with the aim of paving the way for Joby’s air taxi service in those markets.
