Archer Aviation will work with Starlink to bring connectivity to its air taxis. Archer will install Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite internet system into its Midnight aircraft and conduct testing. The system is designed to provide connectivity during Midnight’s air taxi operations.
Midnight is Archer’s piloted electric air taxi designed to carry up to four passengers. The aircraft features 12 engines and propellers built with redundant systems.
Archer plans to utilize Starlink to enable communications between Midnight, pilots and engineering teams on the ground. Archer and Starlink plan to develop a connectivity solution for Archer’s development of autonomous aircraft.
Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit constellation provides coverage at low flight altitudes and in urban environments where cellular coverage can be unreliable. Air taxis operate in and around cities at altitudes of approximately 1,500 feet (457 metres).
“Connectivity is a must have feature for Midnight. Starlink is uniquely built to deliver it,” said Adam Goldstein, founder and chief executive of Archer. “This industry-first collaboration will enable seamless, high-speed connectivity and essential amenities for our passengers and pilots.”
Archer’s goal is to enable passengers in Midnight to travel across cities in 5 to 15 minutes. Starlink will provide passengers with connectivity throughout trips.
Archer Aviation is based in San Jose, California, and is developing electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for air taxi operations. Starlink is engineered and operated by SpaceX.
